I have been photographing weddings for 10 years now, so I have seen a lot of brides through their wedding days. If there was one piece of advice I could offer brides-to-be, it would be this:
plan your wedding on your terms.
All those expectations, judgments, requests people will place on you – don’t hold onto them. Let those well-meaning mothers, fathers, grandparents, friends, wedding magazines, etc. keep their advice and their opinions. Your wedding day is about the love between you and your future spouse. That’s all that’s required. The rest is optional.
Don’t want to wear white? You don’t have to!
Don’t have a father to walk you down the aisle? Choose somebody else who is important to you, or walk/dance yourself down the aisle!
Don’t have something borrowed or something blue? So what!
I would love to see more brides break free from all the stress and anxiety that those societal expectations and traditions can bring. Plan your wedding to fit the personalities of you and your future spouse. The end.
To that end, I designed a themed bridal shoot to show an alternative to the traditional bride. Very little makeup, wild and free hair, no complicated constricting undergarments, no $1000 dress. Just a happy young lady with a simple dress, cowboy boots, and a bouquet. Here is a peek:
